Kaylee’s Song

 Play

As my wife and I unpacked
My stepdaughter came and asked
Do I call you Daddy
I said now honey that’s up to you
But I’m gonna do the things Daddy’s do
And I’ll be your Dad if you’ll have me
Late one night when she awoke frighten from a dream
I held her close and stroked her hair ‘til she fell back asleep

In the morning when she called me Dad
I felt like the world’s richest man
I said now honey don’t you doubt
The love that’s in my heart and the love that’s in my house
Is the love you’ll never be with out

I shared her first broken heart
And the dented fender on the family car
Watched her leave to follow her dreams
She asked me to walk her down the aisle
Took my name for her first child
Love has grown a new family
On the day her mother died and I was all alone
My stepdaughter came to me said Dad I’ll take you home

In the morning when she called me Dad
I felt like the world’s richest man
She said now Daddy don’t you doubt
The love that’s in my heart and the love that’s in my house
Is the love you’ll never be with out

Sunday morning I sat in church and bowed my head to pray
Lord I’ve been a lucky man can we make it one more day
In the silence I heard his words
The love you give is the love you earn
And son you’ve given without any doubt
Now the love that’s in my heart, the love that’s in my house
Is the love you’ll never be with out

The story behind the song…
This song comes from a life experienced with divorce. And it is something that every step parent has to deal with at some point. Although the stepparent never will replace the actual parent that love is a bond that will always be there no matter what.

This song also took a lot of time to tweak and really get to the core of what I was trying to say.
